Antarctic Deployment

On Tuesday 12th & 13th October 2010, I attended the Summer staff pre-deployment training course at the British Antarctic Survey HQ in Cambridge. The day started with registration and coffee. Matt Brown, who will be our Base Commander in Antarctica, explained the briefing arrangements which led onto a welcome and an Introduction to BAS with audio-visual, followed by an Introduction to Halley (the base camp we will be working at), along with a technical overview.  We broke for lunch and had a group photo taken. After lunch the Halley management team conducted discussion groups.  Mid afternoon we learned about clothing,  Karl Tuplin talked about Halley V1 the new base camp being built.  We broke for afternoon tea, and for the rest of the afternoon we discussed, safety, email, phones and travel, and ended the day with a Halley discussion group.  We then departed for the Arundel House Hotel.  After check in and a chat with my room mate, we went down for dinner and made a night of getting to know one another. The next day was pretty much the same but with more information on the Environment, Pay and Personal accounts, human Resources, and a base discussion group.....
